Transfer of Energy

This week, I did a lesson on how energy transfers through matter. It was a very interesting concept to teach students, and I did so with a number of lessons. First, to engage their attention, I showed them a video of a tsunami. We went on to do a number of activities, but their favorite seemed to be viewing the video and having the discussion about Japan and the tsunami that occurred in 2010. All of this tied into lessons on the ear (below is a diagram that a student drew. He found it interesting that as humans age, the cholea becomes brittle and that is why hearing diminishes). The next is after we did a lesson where the students (select students, as I have a couple of mischievous students) and gently pushed the student in front of them and then pulled them gently back. After a minute, we broke the "chain" of students and disconnected on in the middle. They saw how the energy flow stopped. It was overall a fun lesson, which next year, I would like to cross-curricular plan with the music teacher.
